After a fair bit of browsing around my choice fell onto SPDR, as I found all the features available in pretty much any other app, but at a significantly lower price: take Focus for instance, they may have a good reader as it is, but they charge (goodness gracious) 1190₽ per month, whereas SPDR goes at 749, and you can even pay half that if you just text the app to your friend! And that’s a lifetime subscription!

Really happy to have opted for it.

Although after reading a couple of books I noticed some little drawbacks with the text presentation. SPDR does have a “focus” letter, and you can even change the colour of it, and that’s very nice, but: the very idea of this function is to keep you focused on one point on the screen, so that your eyes don’t wander around and the reading is done for the most part by your peripheral vision.

However, in SPDR the focus letter is always dancing around to both left and right, and sometimes it really distracts you from the actual content of the book. To be honest, when I discovered this, I first wanted to apply for a refund and look for some other options on the Appstore, but then I decided to text you guys because you seem to be very responsive to customer feedback.
Hope that this little flaw will be fixed in the upcoming versions. Perhaps just adding a frame with two lines closing in on the letter might do the trick.

Also, the pace of the text could do with some brushing up. At times it feels a bit stunted, e.g. in long sentences with lots of commas, and especially with full stops. It would be much more comfortable if the app offered smoother intervals between sentences, or sentence parts, so that what you’ve read really sinks in. When it’s just chainguning letters at 400wps and more without any (or with very tiny, almost unnoticeable) pause, it’s a bit hard to grasp what the book says.

And one more thing that is not strictly speaking obligatory, but would be a very nice addition, is chapter navigation. Sometimes I need to re-read certain sections of the book either before or ahead of the current point, and there doesn’t seem to be a function for that (not even scrolling). So for that purpose I have to either forget about reviewing those bits, or start from scratch at 1000wps and wait for like 20-30 mins until I get to the part I need. Also hope that this will be taken into account.

Also, I can confirm that the app does have difficulty loading epubs, but my observation is that it only does so with books that have pictures in them. Those with just text in them load perfectly. The multiple 1* ratings for that are totally undeserved.

Otherwise, as I finish writing this, I can’t wait to load the app and finish the book that has taken me a couple of hours to get to 80%, that otherwise would’ve taken me days (if not weeks) to get there.
